Chronic Pain Treatment for the patients
With the widespread lifestyle disorder, our health quotient is degrading day by day. As a matter of fact, many of us suffer from chronic pain for some unknown reasons, with some going undiagnosed. When the mind and body go out of the sync the body starts alerting us in the first place. A recent survey suggests that dietary changes can make major improvements in chronic pain patients.
To prevent such unreasonable and lifelong suffering if we can make changes and follow it is for sure that we can live our lives peacefully. Most of the people are suffering from a number of neurological symptoms such as headaches/migraines, chronic fatigue, sleep issues and cognitive dysfunction parallel to chronic pain. Therefore, Elimination diets are the key to combat all sorts of pains.
Are you suffering from the above-mentioned disorders?
Scientists found a link between chronic pain and consumption of glutamate, a common flavor enhancer in diets worldwide. A small pilot study carried out in eastern Kenya for the preliminary research showed actual results. The outcome demonstrated that the symptoms improved when the study participants cut monosodium glutamate(MSG) from their diets. The findings are published in the journal Nutrition.
In the brain, glutamate plays the role of a regular neurotransmitter. It also can act as an excitotoxin causing to over-stimulate and damage or kill the nerve cells. Glutamate naturally occurs in some foods as a chemical, like soy sauce and parmesan cheese. It is more commonly found as a food additive. Moreover, eliminating constituents that include gluten, dairy, sugar, packaged foods and processed foods are utmost important. One may also need to refrain foods like corn, eggs, shellfish, beef, pork, coffee, tea and chocolate if the pain continues to happen.
“Not everyone needs to eliminate all of these foods. It just depends on what you’re eating on a regular basis.” says, Dr. Shen(Pain management specialist, MD)
Ideally, the pain patients are recommended to restrict these in the diet for between four and six weeks. After eight weeks, if all the symptoms resolve, you can start reintroducing one food at a time. Try eating a significant amount of the targeted food at least twice in for three days. If you feel any sort of discomfort, stop the new food until the symptoms disappear completely. Reintroduce the food for the second time and observe. You have to stop it again if you see the same symptoms coming back, and reintroduce a different food. In this way, you will be clear to find out which food is exactly giving you pain.
Other remedies along with Elimination Diets
Treating chronic pain requires a multi-level approach. Even healthy foods may trigger symptoms in some cases. Doctors sometimes also give the advice to take up other treatments as well:
- Pain medications
- Mind-body medicine (using your mind to influence your body)
- Guided imagery (a pain-relieving technique focusing on mental images)
- Reiki (a healing technique in which touch channels energy to activate the natural healing processes of your body)
- Chiropractic medicine
- Herbal supplements
- Addressing other nutritional issues (e.g., potential deficits)
Additionally, if someone is diabetic, allergic, under blood pressure medications or blood thinners (e.g Coumadin) or have food sensitivities then the medication has to be adjusted, depending on what you’re eliminating. Hence, taking suggestions before the implementation of Elimination Diets is necessary. Stress reduction and getting a good night’s sleep is equally important.
