Karen Handel, Republican candidate wins over 52% of the vote and defeated Democrat Jon Ossoff on Tuesday, in Georgia’s House Race.
The result in a historically conservative Democrat ruling district offers Republicans a warning that Donald Trump, for better or worse, will dominate the campaign cycle.
Georgia’s result was followed by similar narrow margin wins in Montana, Kansas, South Carolina by Republican Party.
According to state party officials, Handel, 55, will become the first Republican woman to represent Georgia in the US House.
“Congratulations to Karen Handel on her big win in Georgia 6th. Fantastic job, we are all very proud of you!“, tweeted Donald Trump after her success.
“A special thanks to the president of the United States of America“, Handel said late Tuesday night as her supporters chanted, “Trump! Trump! Trump!”
“Democrats from coast to coast threw everything they had at this race, and Karen would not be defeated“, US House Speaker Paul Ryan said.
Ossoff won nearly 48% of the votes. He says, “This is not the outcome many of us were hoping for. But this is the beginning of something much bigger than us”.
“We dodged a bullet tonight“, said Georgia based Republican strategist Chip Lake told AFP.
