Pizza.com located in the city of Multan in Islamabad became the first eatery in the country to use a “robot waitress” to serve dinner. According to the newspaper Dawn, this robot has been developed by pizzeria owner’s son, Syed Osama Aziz, an electrical engineering graduate from National University of Science and Technology in Islamabad. “My son was interested in going to the United States for further studies, but I asked him to do something for our country, particularly this city (Multan). I am also feeling proud as a Multani; we have left Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad behind,” says Syed Aziz Ahmed Jafari, the owner of Pizza.com.
“The robot is able to navigate to the customer’s table, greet the customer, serve the meal and come back to the counter,” said Osama, the developer. “The weight of the robot is 25 kg and it is capable of carrying 5 kilograms of food at a time. It also detects the obstacle in her way and requests them to move away so that she can move freely and complete her orders”.
The Robotic waitress is a primitive way to cut down on production costs. But Jafari who is interested in introducing four more robotic waitresses in his outlet will not reduce the number of human waiters from his shop because he doesn’t want any of them to be jobless.
This idea is fantastic to build customers in the city of Multan but the technology used here is quite expensive. “I took the basic idea from China where robots are working and serving in restaurants already,” Osama said. “The female body shape is helping the machine to maintain the weight it is carrying. We have put a scarf around her neck to make clear that it is a female robot, but much improvement in needed in her,” he added. He wants the government’s assistance in advancing this technology in Multan.
“Soon after the news of the robotic waitress spread, there is a long queue of customers outside the shop who want to dine here,” said Syed Aziz Ahmed Jafari, the owner. He said his son’s unique idea of making a robotic waitress to give a boost to the business fulfilled. People are coming to his pizzeria not only from Multan but even from the adjoining districts. He has also received calls from businessmen who expressed their interest in such machines. The outlet has been teeming with visitors from other states also.
