Tennis Star Sania Mirza would be praying for the fitness of her playing partners at Wimbledon, which begins from this Monday. Kirsten Flipkens, and Ivan Dodig, both mirza’s parners have serious enough injuries to trouble Sania.
Yaroslava Shvedova, the regular partner of Sania had been struggling with an ankle injury and decided to withdraw from Wimbledon about three days ago before the draws were to be finalized which led the Indian star to join hands with Flipkens who is ranked 50 in doubles. Shvedova was advised to go for a surgery.
Mirza and Flipkens had withdrawn the Ageon International in Eastbourne earlier this week due to shoulder injury of Belgium based Flipkens. The duo had not even played a single match in the championship.
In Mirza’s column in the Times of India on Saturday , Mirza said she had picked Flipkens, a 31 years old who has “limited” experience as a doubles player, because she is a “skillful grass-courter.”
But unfortunately for her, Flipkens hurt her shoulder during one of the practice sessions just on the eve of the Eastbourne tournament.
On the injury of her partner Mirza wrote,”I was left high and dry again, unable to even get onto the court,”
After hurting his back just before the French Open quarter-final which we lost to eventual champions Rohan Bopanna and Gabriela Dabrowski, Ivan had recovered completely but had to withdraw in Eastbourne this week after he hurt himself again while playing in the singles event,” she mentioned
There are little possibilities that at this stage that the Belgian will recover fully to be at her best in the tournament.
Sania/Flipkens, who are currently ranked 13th at Wimbledon, are supposed to play their first-round match against the Japenese-Chinese pair of Naomi Osaka and Shuai Zhang.
To add to her problems, Dodig, her mixed doubles partner, is dealing with a nagging back injury which might double her worries.
“If he does not recover in time, I may have to find a new mixed doubles partner at the last moment as well and that is again an onerous task.”, Mirza said.
With the doubles draw to be announced on July 5, Mirza would have her fingers crossed on the fitness of her partners.
